Changemaker Designs

A San Francisco based interior design firm, empowering clients to make beautiful and considered changes to their spaces.

Who We Are

Our Vision

Changemaker Designs was founded on a simple belief: change — in life and in our homes — is something to embrace, not endure. Every new chapter is an invitation to reimagine how we can all live with greater ease, beauty, and intention.

How We Work

Changemaker Designs’ Owner and Principal Designer, Sarah Gough, has a gift for seeing potential where others see limitations. Trained in law and policy, she thinks analytically and plans with care — but her real superpower is her eye.

Sarah's aesthetic is natural, a little quirky, and always rooted in real life. She draws out the best version of your style rather than replacing it with her own, ensuring every project is a true collaboration.

Honed through decades of living in radically different places — high-rise apartments in Hong Kong, rural houses in West Virginia and Montana, and everywhere in between — Sarah has developed a deep instinct for what works, what lasts, and what inspires.

Design Principles

Changemaker Designs’ approach is shaped by four commitments.

Quality

Durable materials and expert craftsmanship as non-negotiables. Solid wood, raw metals, real stone, natural fabrics, low-toxicity paints — chosen for their integrity and because they're kinder to you and everyone you share your home with. Every space designed to breathe and age gracefully.

Restraint

Not everything needs to be touched. The imperfection allowed, the element withheld — these are intentional acts. Preserving negative space, uncovering what was always there, and reaching for what could be. The best designers do this instinctively.

Curiosity

Every space gets a genuinely fresh look. No preconceived ideas, no dogma — just one question: what could this particular space, for these particular people, become?

Synergy

Two heads are better than one. When your personal taste and knowledge of how you live meets Sarah's eye for what's possible, the result exceeds what either could have created alone.

Principal Designer & Owner

Sarah Gough

Sarah believes your home should be beautiful and functional — a space that supports the life you're actually living. As the founder of Changemaker Designs, she brings an uncommon combination of discipline, design intuition, and original thinking to each project.

"A home that works for your life doesn't happen by accident. It's something you return to deliberately, asking at every stage: does this space still fit who we are and how we live?"

Her aesthetic — quietly considered, nature-inspired, a little quirky — is the product of years of experimenting in her own homes. From rural West Virginia to the skyscrapers of Hong Kong to the hills of the San Francisco East Bay, she has inhabited spaces of every scale and character, each one honing her eye and layering her visual vocabulary with unexpected textures and references.

But above all, Sarah designs for real life — its complexity, messiness, and inevitable change — empowering clients to embrace that change with intention and optimism.

An Unlikely Path to Design

A trained lawyer, non-profit founder, and local government official, Sarah spent years mastering the art of seeing the big picture while wrestling with consequential details — skills that translate directly into designing a space and managing the complexity that comes with it.

She has learned to ask the questions that matter: what can this space enable? The result is a designer who doesn't impose a signature style so much as reveal the best version of yours — ensuring your space not only reflects who you are, but fosters the life you aspire to live.

Over the years, Sarah has designed across every scale — new construction, large renovations, smaller aesthetic improvements — for clients and her own family alike. Each project has reinforced what she always knew to be true: great design enhances the quality of life for those willing to prioritize it.

"Change can be good — especially when we make it."

What to Expect

Philosophy

Beauty matters — to our joy, our comfort, our sense of well-being. It can be created anywhere; no space is too small or too ordinary to hold it. AND, every room should work for the people who live in it, making daily life easier and more satisfying regardless of circumstance or budget.

Aesthetic

Inspired by nature, shaped by the many places Sarah has called home. Minimalist in spirit and an eclectic style that resists easy definition.

Focus

Quality finishes and craftsmanship, color as a tool for transformation, and a commitment to rigorous — at times ruthless — editing.

Approach

Creatively courageous, honest to a fault, and a willing challenger of the status quo. Each decision attuned to the client's particular context and vision, with meticulous tracking of every design detail.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between interior design and interior decorating?

These two terms get used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Interior decorating is about the finished space — making it beautiful, comfortable, and complete once construction is done. Interior design encompasses all of that, and goes much further.

Interior design begins before the first wall goes up. It is woven into the architectural and construction process itself — ensuring your vision is understood and protected at every phase. The right designer asks the questions others will not think to ask, spots the creative opportunities hiding in the plans, and keeps the bigger picture in focus all the way through.

Why work with a designer?

A renovation or construction project involves thousands of decisions, many of them urgent, many consequential, most happening all at once. It can be a lot.

A good designer turns that chaos into momentum. Part of that job is making sure you always know what’s possible, understand your options, and have everything you need to make informed decisions — so the choices you make are truly yours, not defaults you stumbled into.

Sarah leads the creative vision and then tracks the details so nothing falls through the cracks. The result is a home that actually exceeds your expectations.

What does working with Changemaker Designs look like?

When you work with Changemaker Designs, you work directly with Principal Designer Sarah Gough — from the first conversation to the final walkthrough. She will help you get clear on what you want, push your thinking in the best possible ways, and make sure that the final result is something you will love for years. Here’s what that includes:

· Original design concepts developed through mood boards, material samples, and as many conversations as it takes until you feel genuinely excited.

· Project management of the full interior design scope.

· Sourcing of items not within the GC’s purview.

· Regular communication with the construction team and vendors to keep implementation on track.

· Site visits throughout the project.

How do you charge?

Our goal is to make great design accessible. Fees are structured to be transparent and fair — and we pass our full designer trade discount, typically 20–25% off retail, directly to clients. That savings often offsets a meaningful portion of the design fee.

Major Renovations + New Construction

A flat fee based on our estimate of time and effort and the anticipated increase in property value. If scope grows, we agree on any additional fee before proceeding. Beyond the flat fee, we are reimbursed only for travel expenses. Clients pay all materials, labor, and services directly. 3D renderings are available upon request and for an additional charge.

Modest Remodels, Decorating + Homestyling

A sliding-scale fixed fee based on the scope and the time required to develop and execute the design. Trade discounts apply here too.

Is there anything you don't do?

We are a small, focused firm — and that focus is what makes our work good. That said, a few things fall outside our scope:

· Receiving, storing, returning, or transporting finishes, furnishings, or construction materials.

· Physical labor — moving, unpacking, hanging.

· Managing the construction budget or GC’s scope of work.

· Obtaining planning, building, or other permits or approvals.

· Paying directly for anything beyond our reimbursable travel expenses.

How do I get started?

The first step is a paid 90-minute design consultation during which Sarah will walk through your space, talk through what is and is not working, and start imagining what could be. By the end, Sarah will leave with a clear sense of your vision, your priorities, and your style.

Following the visit, you will receive a follow-up email summarizing the initial design direction with some vendor and product recommendations as a tangible starting point you can refer back to, whether or not you choose to move forward with a full engagement.
